Notes for Educators:

The lesson plan consists of 4 interactive exercises; each designed to span either 20 or 40 minutes. Those exercises can be combined or divided to suit the specific needs and dynamics of your teaching environment and the duration can be customized based on the time constraints of your class period.

Red flags may arise and need intervention such as children and youth sharing lived experiences of being exploited online, cyber bullying, or other forms of gender-based violence. In such instances, educators should review their school's anti-sex trafficking protocol to promote culturally safe responses and adequate interventions. (See policy in additional resources)

The incorporation of questions centered on emotions into the exercises aims to foster the development of emotional intelligence competencies. This inclusion seeks to cultivate an environment where individuals learn not only to acknowledge but also to embrace various emotions while acquiring essential skills to navigate and cope with them effectively.

Based on White Ribbon's successful approach in promoting healthy masculinities and engaging men to prevent gender-based violence and all forms of discrimination, it becomes evident that addressing emotions with young boys and men plays a pivotal role in reducing and preventing the frequency and severity of harm perpetrated by men and boys. Introducing grade 4 students to gender-equitable attitudes and behaviours early fosters healthy masculinities grounded in empathy, compassion, and resilience. This early engagement builds a foundation for navigating challenges and promotes a culture of empathy and inclusion as they grow.
